Your 500 rupee note can be a fake

The Tamil Nadu Police suspect that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has mounted a major operation in southern India to circulate "authentic looking fake 500-rupee notes".Having stumbled upon a gang of youths pretending to be from Malda district of West Bengal but later found out to be illegals from Bangladesh, police recovered a cache of Rs.200,000 from them late on Monday after sustained questioning.

"The suspects are claiming that someone palmed off the currency during their travel from Kolkata. But the inconsistencies in their story and the admission that they are from Bangladesh alerted us to the possibility that a huge gang may be indulging in this mischief," said Deputy Commissioner of Police A.G. Mourya."Probably this is the proverbial tip of the iceberg because all of them are carrying mobiles from which several overseas calls have been made. Some of them were made to some parts of Bangladesh known for being ISI hubs," Mourya said.

An officer from the police Q Branch, which investigates terrorist offences, revealed that some leads were being pursued to find out the reasons as why some calls were made to the Middle East."There are some untraceable calls - which may have been made to places in Pakistan. We are continuing our interrogation," the official said. Cases have been filed against the offenders under the Foreigners Act.
